WASHINGTON-Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell announced Tim Donahue, Nextel Communications Inc. president and chief executive officer, will assume the chairmanship of the newly re-chartered Network Reliability and Interoperability Council.
The FCC said the council is being chartered for a two-year term beginning Jan. 6, 2004, and will be focused on the systems engineering aspects of emergency services and developing recommendations for the FCC and the telecommunications industry to insure reliability, security, interoperability, and interconnectivity of and accessibility to public telecommunications networks and the Internet.
“I am honored to accept chairman Powell’s invitation to chair the council for the coming term,” said Donahue in a statement. “These challenging times require that all stakeholders in the telecommunications sector continue to work cooperatively to serve the public interest by ensuring the integrity of our nation’s communications infrastructure.”
Additional council members include representatives from telecommunications carriers; the satellite, cable television, wireless and computer industries; trade associations; labor and consumer representatives; manufacturers; research organizations; and government-related organizations.
