Consumers spend more on wireless than other telecom services

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.-Personal use of mobile devices is on the rise, according to a new survey from IDC.

The research group found that consumers spend more on wireless service each month than on broadband, cable or satellite television, or landline phone services. In addition, consumers make nearly 36 percent of their personal calls at home from mobile phones. The survey also found Wi-Fi is the most popular way for consumers to wirelessly access the Internet, and they use it to access e-mail, check the news and search the Internet.

IDC also found that mobile consumers tend to adopt more of the latest at-home electronic technology and products. “Consumers who have adopted mobile solutions either within or outside of the home represent a unique segment to market next-generation technology and services to,” said Randy Giusto of IDC. “The home is considered the next big thing and understanding the usage patterns and buying intentions of consumers who are mobile is key to tapping a red-hot market segment.”
