Sun Microsystems Inc. announced its newly launched Java.com Internet site will feature wireless Java games for Vodafone Live! subscribers. The effort is aimed at promoting Sun’s wireless Java push, as well as Vodafone’s Live! wireless data offering.
“We’re delighted to have our consumer game offerings on Java.com,” said Guy Laurence, Vodafone’s global content marketing director. “Through Sun and the Java.com Web site, Vodafone will be able to present its Vodafone Live! games offering to an even wider audience and reach over 6 million monthly Java.com visitors. The Java platform delivers the power and functionality our customers want for every time, everywhere game playing.”
Sun recently redesigned its Java.com Internet site to attract more consumers to the technology. Although it is primarily designed for desktop computer users, a major portion of the site is dedicated to the promotion of Java 2 Micro Edition, the wireless version of Java. There are more than 120 million Java handsets worldwide working on more than 70 carrier networks.
At the same time Sun is working to promote its Java technology, so has Qualcomm Inc. been promoting its rival BREW application download service. Although Qualcomm insists its technology is not competing with Java, wireless application developers have so far been forced to develop separately for Java and BREW. Developers have been drawn to the simplified BREW business case, but also by the wider distribution of Java.
