Wireless data nears success with businesses

CEDAR KNOLLS, N.J.-Wireless data is on the verge of success within the business market, a move 10 years in the making, according to a new study from research and consulting firm Probe Research.

“Devices and handsets have increased computing power and extended battery life,” said David Chamberlain, Probe Group research director. “Data networks are more extensive and uniform, and in most of the world, the number of protocols in use has shrunk to just two, GSM/GPRS and CDMA 1xRTT.”

Probe forecasts that the number of wireless enterprise users will grow more than 18 percent in the next five years. The firm said the greatest growth will take place in Latin America, where businesses already use mobile voice services.

The findings echo similar comments from Nokia Corp., which recently formed an enterprise division aimed at selling wireless to business users.
