PHOENIX-Worldscout Corp. announced it purchased location-services company Alltigo Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Worldscout said the deal will bolster its efforts in location tracking.
Alltigo’s Personal Location Tracking Device combines GPS and GSM/GPRS technologies to locate, track and protect, people, vehicles and other mobile assets remotely, via the Internet, the companies said. Worldscout said it will add the offering to its omniscout product line.
“This acquisition will help move us into brand new markets,” said Robert Metz, Worldscout’s president. “The potential is incredible because we now have a mainstream product which extends the capabilities of vehicle tracking and monitoring. We now have a small hand held unit which gives us the ability to track, in real time, any person, vehicle or asset remotely, via the Internet. From a consumer technology perspective this is unprecedented.”
The acquisition comes amid a rapidly growing market for location-services running over cellular networks. Indeed, most of the nation’s major carriers already offer location-based services running over cell phones in one form or another. In addition, there are a variety of third-party players in the field, offering remote tracking and locating services.
