IRVINE, Calif.—Boost Mobile expanded its prepaid service plans to cover price tiers at the $30, $50 and $70 levels. Current Analysis’ Weston Henderek, in a note about the move, said the new plans likely will help the carrier stay more competitive against its rivals.
“The new plans … give Boost customers more options when considering monthly service offerings without a contract,” Henderek wrote. “However, the new Boost ‘premium’ plans still offer fewer anytime minutes or higher price points for the same number of minutes as similar offerings from Virgin Mobile and Amp’d.”
Boost’s new “premium prepaid” plans replace the carrier’s old $50 offering with three options: unlimited push-to-talk and 10 cents a minute calling for $30; 400 anytime minutes and unlimited PTT for $50; and 600 anytime minutes, unlimited PTT and unlimited nights and weekends at $70.
Current Analysts said Boost’s new prepaid plans stack up well against similar offerings from Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless L.L.C., but come up short against the plans from mobile virtual network operator Amp’d Mobile. Amp’d offers 500 minutes for $30, 1,000 minutes for $50, and 1,500 minutes for $70, according to Henderek, a Current Analysis analyst.
