Symbian predicts expanding business

LONDON—Smart phone OS vendor Symbian Ltd. announced increasing shipments and rising revenues in the second quarter, and promised more of the same in the future.

“Looking forward … I expect to see an acceleration of Symbian smart phones in the lower-cost device market segments, driving higher volumes of exciting phones and services,” said Nigel Clifford, chief executive officer for the operating system vendor.

Symbian reported that its licensees shipped 24 million phones running the Symbian OS during the first half of this year. The company said it scored an average of $5.50 in royalties per each unit shipped.

Symbian is a privately held joint venture among several major handset vendors including Nokia Corp. The company commands the lion’s share of the smart phone OS market, but is facing increasing competition from Windows giant Microsoft Corp.
