Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

• Afghanistan: Siemens AG said it has been selected by Telephone Systems International Ltd. to set up a W-CDMA network in Kabul for Afghan Wireless Communication Company. Siemens also will supply 2G equipment to the carrier, according to the contract.

   

• China: L.M. Ericsson said it finalized several major GSM expansion contracts with China Mobile Communications Corp. during the first half of the year. The contracts together totaled $550 million and covered 17 regions.

   

• Greece: Nokia Corp. said it has extended its existing W-CDMA 3G radio network contract with TIM Hellas in Greece to cover HSDPA technology and the company’s Flexi W-CDMA base stations.

   

• Indonesia: Ericsson said it won a contract with PT Telekomunikasi Selular Indonesia to provide a 3G/W-CDMA network to the carrier. The contract includes HSPA technology.

   

• Poland: Ericsson said it signed a three-year, managed-services agreement with Polkomtel S.A. that calls for the company to manage design, develop, deploy and integrate the carrier’s 2G/3G network in northern and western Poland.

   

• Saudi Arabia: Siemens said it upgraded the mobile network of Saudi Telecom with W-CDMA technology in northern areas of the country.

Wi-Fi

• China: Strix Systems said it won a contract with Chinese authorities to supply a public-safety Wi-Fi network in Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.

WiMAX

• Austria and Slovakia: WiMAX Telecom AG selected Alvarion Ltd. to provide its BreezeMAX 3500 equipment to help the carrier expand its WiMAX networks in the two countries.

   

• Sri Lanka: Aperto Networks said it will provide WiMAX equipment to Sri Lanka Telecom to provide coverage for the upcoming South Asian Games.

Miscellaneous

• Bangladesh: Warid Telecom awarded Ericsson a managed-services contract for its GSM/GPRS network in Bangladesh. The contract covers operation, management and maintenance of the core network, backbone transmission and real-time charging/value-added services. Ericsson also will run Warid’s radio network in the Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal areas of western Bangladesh.

   

• United States: Aruba Networks announced a joint marketing and reseller agreement with General Dynamics, under the U.S. Air Force Network Centric Solutions’ indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, to offer wireless local area network and mobility technology to the U.S. government.
