Ericsson fires patent-infringement lawsuit at Samsung

MARSHALL, Texas—L.M. Ericsson, the Swedish wireless telecommunications firm, has sued South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for allegedly infringing on 11 of Ericsson’s patents, according to a complaint filed July 28 in a U.S. district court in Texas. Both companies maintain offices in Texas.

Three of the patents relate to power management technology in cell phones. Ericsson is asking the court to award damages commensurate to lost revenues as well as punitive damages.

Ericsson representatives were not immediately available for comment. However, press reports this morning draw on comments from Ericsson spokespersons who described the lawsuit as the result of a cross-licensing agreement between the two parties that expired last year and a continuation of a lawsuit Ericsson filed in February.

Samsung representatives were not immediately available for comment.

The dispute echoes the current impasse between Qualcomm Inc. and Nokia Corp. in which both parties are in contention over an expired cross-licensing agreement.
