Microsoft’s smart phone business reaches profitability

REDMOND, Wash.—Microsoft Corp.’s Mobile and Embedded Devices division achieved profitability for the first time, the company announced. The division houses the company’s smart phone efforts.

Microsoft’s division logged an operating income of $2 million for the year, a turnaround from a loss of $65 million the division reported in 2005. For the most-recent quarter, the unit reported an operating loss of $2 million, an improvement from an operating loss of $15 million during the same quarter last year.

Revenues for the division during the quarter were $113 million, up from $80 million during the same quarter last year. Revenues for the year were $377 million, a healthy increase from revenues of $262 in 2005.

The company also said licenses for Windows Mobile-based phones grew 90 percent during the fiscal 2006 year.
