Amazon kindles interest in its next tablet launch

It’s hard to believe, but as of today you can no longer buy a new Kindle Fire from Amazon. The retail powerhouse says the popular tablet is “sold out,” sparking speculation that a new-and-improved Amazon tablet is in the works.

Amazon says that the Kindle Fire was the most successful product launch in the retailer’s history, and that all of the 10 best-selling items on its site are Kindle devices or Kindle content. Amazon also says the Kindle Fire has 22% of the U.S. tablet market.

According to IHS iSuppli, Amazon’s share of the tablet market slipped in the second quarter, while Samsung gained market share and Apple enjoyed a huge surge in shipments after releasing the third iteration of the wildly popular iPad.

Samsung’s tablets still appear to be outselling the Kindle products by about 2-to-1, but this could change in the wake of Apple’s recent court victory. After a jury found that Samsung violated Apple’s patents, the Cupertino company asked the judge in the case for an injunction that would prohibit sales of 9 Samsung products, including the flagship Galaxy Tab 10.1.
