UTStarcom sells dual-mode CDMA/GSM phone through China Unicom

ALAMEDA, Calif.—UTStarcom Inc. introduced its T66 dual-mode, dual-standby CDMA/GSM handset and announced China Unicom plans to offer the handset for use with its World Wind dual-mode service.

The handset is targeted at mid- to high-end consumers and business users who want entertainment features on their phone, said the company. The phone includes two 2.6-inch Thin Film Transistor color screens and a 1.3 megapixel camera with zoom and flash.

The CDMA and GSM modes are designed to stand by simultaneously, allowing users to choose either mode to make a phone call or send a message. Previous phones working on the World Wind service could support either CDMA or GSM at any time, but not both simultaneously, said UTStarcom.

The T66 will be available in black and silver.

UTStarcom joins Motorola Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. in selling dual-mode CDMA/GSM phones. Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. have sold such devices.
