A survey of nearly 2,000 U.S. and U.K. iPhone users showed that the majority of them plan to upgrade to the iPhone 5, particularly if user reviews on the device are positive.
The survey, done earlier this month in both countries just before the iPhone 5 pre-order craze began, was part of a report by mobile ad network Mojiva on the five-year anniversary of the introduction of the first iPhone.
Apple fanboys and –girls are nothing if not loyal, particularly in the United States. The survey showed that 82% of current iPhone users in the United States plan to stick with an iPhone for their next upgrade, compared to 68% of the U.K. respondents.
Among the 1,000 U.S. iPhone users, 70% said that they planned to purchase the highly-anticipated iPhone 5. That number bounced up to 89% if the device garners positive reviews. Most of the U.S. participants (about 60%) had owned their current iPhones for more than six months.
Enthusiasm for the new iPhone was particularly high among the 43% of U.S. respondents who owned both an iPad and an iPhone. A whopping 81% said they would upgrade to the iPhone 5; 95% said they would do it if iPhone 5 reviews are positive. More than a third of U.S. iPhone and iPad owners planned on pre-ordering or buying the new device on the first day of its release.
The survey had good news for Apple on the tablet front as well. About two-thirds of both the U.S. and U.K. respondents said they would own or planned to purchase a new iPad in the next six months.
Respondents were asked about what they’d like to see in mobile advertising on their Apple devices. In both countries, about half of users said they would like to see more discounts and special promotions. More than two-thirds of both U.S. and U.K. participants said they would be more likely to interact with ads that were based on their browsing history.
The iPhone accounted for 34% of the U.S. smartphone market as of June 2012, and 28% of the smartphone market in the United Kingdom. The majority of iPhone 5 pre-orders are supposed to arrive at customers’ homes tomorrow, and the device will be available in Apple and carrier retail stores beginning tomorrow morning.
