NETANYA, Israel-Intel Corp. has selected Siano Mobile Silicon’s multi-band, multi-standard receiver chipset for Intel’s mobile TV reference platform in its Xscale product line.
The collaboration comes at a time when mobile TV component makers are matching up with chipset and handset vendors. The news also follows speculation on Intel’s possible sale of its Xscale business to focus on core competencies in the PC market.
Siano is a fabless semiconductor maker of mobile digital TV chipsets and its SMS1000 product are expected to support mobile TV standards including DVB-H, DVB-T, DAB, IP-DAB and T-DMB in multiple spectrum ranges. The Siano chip will serve Intel’s 3G multimedia reference platform for original design manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers, network operators and application and content providers.
The reference platform provides network operators with a single component offering seamless switching of content between unicast and multicast content over 3G networks and broadcast content over DVB-H/T, T-DMB and DAB.
“We view MDTV as one of the next killer applications for mobile devices,” said Barry Evans, general manager of Intel’s applications processor business unit. “End-users can now have home theater-like DTV experiences on the go.”
