MONTEREY, Calif.—AirPlay Networks Inc. announced plans to launch a series of mobile games based on live TV broadcasts.
The San Francisco startup said it will allow subscribers to predict plays during sporting events, compete against contestants in game shows, and pick winners and losers from reality programs. AirPlay Sports, the first title in the series, is expected to launch as college and professional football seasons begin in the fall.
“We’re going to offer carriers, broadcasters and advertisers new opportunities to connect television with wireless devices and transform TV from a passive pastime to an engaging, competitive experience,” said Morgan Guenther, AirPlay’s chief executive officer.
Guenther declined to discuss pricing for the service, although subscriber costs could be offset by advertisements.
While some analysts are dubious of the prospects for mobile TV, AirPlay hopes to lure users by coupling the application with community-based, interactive gaming. The company said it has patent-pending technology that will enable multiplayer gaming during broadcasts.
AirPlay is backed by $4 million in funding from Redpoint Ventures and Qualcomm Inc.
