DoCoMo puts $42.5 million toward TV shows for cell phones

TOKYO-Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo Inc. announced a deal with Nippon Television Network Corp. to develop TV shows and other content for both mobile and conventional television.

The seven-year, limited-liability partnership-called D.N. dream partners L.L.P.-will be funded with about $85 million, with each company providing half of the investment. It is tentatively scheduled to be formed on April 3.

“The partnership will invest in content and also develop content itself, including TV programs that can be viewed with mobile phones,” the companies reported.

Additionally, the two companies said they plan to cooperatively study emerging business opportunities, such as a service that blends the terrestrial digital broadcasting with DoCoMo’s wireless Web i-mode services, and content that NTV can develop for DoCoMo’s video streaming and video clip distribution offerings. The companies are planning NTV events with special activities for users of certain DoCoMo phones.
