SMS Forum calls SMS ‘fifth channel’ for advertising

SEATTLE-Short messaging services can be considered the “fifth channel” for media advertising in North America, according to the SMS Forum.

The group believes the functionality of common short codes across North American carriers will bolster the mobile marketing industry and support new branded applications. The SMS Forum’s faith in CSCs follows demonstrations by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association and the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association regarding their plans for the management and administration of CSCs across carriers.

“We fully appreciate the coordination efforts and support provided by CTIA and CWTA; their success in implementing common short codes across carriers is critical to igniting the fifth channel,” said Danh Lai, chair of the SMS Forum.
