Viastar grows repair biz

During the past five years, Viastar Technologies has grown from a two-man, home-based operation into a business that accounts for 130 employees in three facilities.

Philadelphia-based Viastar Technologies repairs and refurbishes wireless devices and components, a business that can assist carriers in reducing the costs of subscribers and in reducing costs associated with churn, according to Eric Weinberg, the company’s executive sales manager.

The company repairs phones it receives via carriers or manufacturers from end users, as well as refurbishes large quantities of reusable phones. Environmental safety and compliance is a top priority, according to Weinberg, and the company sells components that cannot be reused for recycling. Repair center technicians are certified and trained continually, allowing Viastar to offer six-month to one-year warranties on its remanufactured devices.

The company operates out of a production facility and a separate e-cycling facility. In addition, Viastar runs a Verizon Wireless resale agency, which it believes supports its commitment to manufacturers. Viastar also offers solutions including revenue logistics support, asset recovery services, customized reporting and real-time online repair tracking databases. The company boasts a 72-hour turnaround on individual phone repairs.

Viastar is on the advisory board of the Internal Association of Electronics Recyclers (IAER), a trade association for the electronics recycling industry. It represents the first wireless repair facility involved with the organization.

The company’s biggest customers include Alltel Corp., Brightstar Corp. and Verizon Wireless.
