Microsoft's Kin boasts Nvidia Tegra chip

By now, we all know what Microsoft’s new Kin offerings do in terms of making one’s anti-social phone habits even more pervasive and irritating. But what’s powering the narcissistic device?

Well, that would be Nvidia’s first-generation Tegra chip – Tegra APX 2600 – which the firm touts as delivering high-quality multimedia and extended battery life to both Kin phones.

Why first-generation Tegra and not second generation, one might ask – and one would not get much of an answer from either Microsoft or Nvidia. Indeed, Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chip has been out for some time, but still seems to be lacking in those much needed design wins.

As for Microsoft, the firm has already used Tegra 1 for its Zune music player and was probably more than happy with the chip’s ability to provide 720p HD video playback and recording, seeing no need for an upgrade to second generation. Either that or it still had plenty of Tegra 1 inventory to get through.

But for those wanting to know more about what the little chip can actually do, check out the product page, here
