Google ended its offer of three free months of Netflix for buyers of its new Chromecast device, citing overwhelming demand. The $35 dongle that streams video content from mobile devices to TV sets launched Wednesday and by Thursday afternoon the accompanying Netflix promotion was sold out.
Amazon and the Best Buy website have both sold out of the Chromecast device, as have all the Best Buy retail stores that we checked. Best Buy’s website says the device can arrive by August 6, while Google’s own Google Play store says it will not ship for 2-3 weeks.
So far there are no official estimates of the number of devices Google has sold. Entrepreneur Sahas Katta is in contact with sources who claim that Amazon sold as many as 700,000, and that a quarter of a million Netflix promotions were activated before the offer was cancelled.
