SAN RAMON, Calif.-A recent Yankee Group study of global wireline and wireless carriers commissioned by the International Packet Communications Consortium, showed that both groups are dedicated to deploying packet-based architectures in their networks, with wireline carriers moving more quickly to meet the goal.
According to the study, 31 percent of wireless operators have implemented or are testing packet telephony in their networks, compared with 73 percent of wireline providers. Wireless carriers named compatibility and reliability as top reasons for choosing a packet-based architecture vendor, whereas wireline carriers pointed to reduction of capital expenditures.
Carriers in Eastern and Western Europe are most likely to have already deployed or tested packet-based solutions, while Asian and Latin American carriers think it is important to migrate to a packet-based architecture during the next two years.
“Our research indicates that the deployment of packet-based architectures in all types of service provider networks around the world has begun in earnest and will continue in an irreversible trend,” said Chirstin Flynn, director of communications network infrastructure for the Yankee Group.
