Mobile Minute: Ubuntu record, Windows YouTube app

The creators of Ubuntu have raised a record $10.3 million in a crowdfunding campaign to build a hybrid PC/smartphone. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is selling the Ubuntu Edge online for $695, having cut the price during the campaign. It says it needs to raise $32 million to start production, and with an August 21 deadline looming that does not look likely. But Canonical says it has caught the attention of some potential corporate backers who could step in.

In other news, Google is again blocking the Windows YouTube app from accessing its popular video service. Google says the app violates its terms of service. Microsoft says Google has asked it to create the app in HTML 5, something that was not required of Apple’s developers when they created the iOS YouTube app. Google’s Android YouTube app is not based on HTML 5 either.
