NEW DELHI, India-The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued guidelines for public wireless Internet access services.
Called “Guideline on the Provision of Wireless LAN Service using Spread Spectrum Communications Equipment,” the guidelines explain the framework for the use of wireless local area network (WLAN) equipment for public wireless Internet access. The regulator had already allowed free use of WLAN access points and customer access equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz frequency band.
An MCMC statement said that anybody in Kuala Lumpur wishing to provide public wireless Internet access using the scheduled equipment does not need to register or apply to MCMC for a service provider license, as long as access to the Internet is provided through a licensed Internet service provider (ISP).
“Increasingly, tech-savvy Malaysians are discovering the benefits of being able to access the Internet at their favorite coffee shop, shopping center or other hot spot area, but as the regulator we need to ensure that providers of public wireless Internet access services use the right equipment and ensure that they are operating within the law,” the statement said.
