BEIJING-China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), has appointed a new minister of Information Industry. Wang Xudong is succeeding outgoing minister Wu Jichuan, who was appointed vice chairman of the NPC Committee on Education, Science, Culture and Health.
Wang Xudong was born in January 1946 in Jiangsu Province. He became a member of the Chinese Communist Party in 1972. In 1982, he graduated from the systems engineering department of Tianjin’s Science & Technology Graduate College. He started his career in the army’s 1418 Research Institute. Subsequently he headed the 18th Research Institute of the then Ministry of Electronics Industries (MEI).
He became vice party secretary of Tianjin Municipality in 1991 and a few years later vice director of the organization department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In June 2000, he was transferred to Hebei Province as party secretary, the number-one position in the province. He was appointed vice minister of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) in January this year.
The new minister is a member of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.
The National People’s Congress also elected a new state president, Hu Jintao, and premier, Wen Jiabao.
