NEW DELHI, India-In the ongoing price war in the Indian wireless market, leading GSM companies have announced plans to make cell-to-cell incoming calls free, in a phased manner by end-February.
The announcement comes close to the temporary truce between GSM and wireless local loop (WLL) operators and the government assurance that a new interconnect agreement will be finalized soon for the GSM cellular industry.
Last week, GSM players faced a problem as their customers could not connect to fixed-line phones operated by state-owned companies, MTNL and BSNL, in what was being seen as an unofficial blockade. The action of fixed-line companies followed GSM players’ refusals to provide interconnect to WLL providers. The situation was saved following an intervention by Communications Minister Pramod Mahajan.
