DUBLIN, Ireland-A startup streaming technology company in the United Kingdom said it has developed software to allow broadcast-quality streamed video to be delivered to mobile devices without modifications to the hardware.
Mobile Video Imaging is looking for about 10 million euros (US$10.2 million) of working capital to enable it to offer video on demand solutions by the middle of next year. The company said it is already in talks with major content companies such as the BBC and expects to have about 30 channels of news, sports and entertainment available by December 2003.
MVI Director of Communications David Massey said the company is working hard to put together a series of content deals, at which point more detailed negotiations will take place with operators.
He added that video-on-demand applications, such as highlights of football matches or horse races, will be a more appealing proposition to adults than picture messaging, which many network operators are heavily promoting.
The technology is being tested on the O2 XDA and Compaq iPAQ devices and will also be available to owners of the forthcoming range of video-enabled Nokia and Ericsson handsets.
