JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-The Namibian mobile telephony market is expected to witness the entrance of a second operator within 12 months. Gabes Shihepo, deputy information minister, said in a speech the process of issuing the second cellular license has been put into motion.
The speech by Shihepo was in response to a question posed earlier by Nahas Angula, minister for higher education, training and employment creation, during a debate on the policy considerations on information technology and communications.
Angula accused the incumbent mobile operator, Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC), of abusing its monopoly position and calling on the regulator, the Namibia Communications Commission (NCC), to liberalize the mobile telephony market to improve overall service delivery to subscribers in Namibia.
Shihepo added the government had taken the decision to license an additional network as early as 2000 and that consultants had been engaged to assist in the process.
