Nokia Solutions and Networks has been chosen as a supplier for the roll-out of LTE by Taiwanese operator Chunghwa Telecom.
Chunghwa is the largest telcom operator in Taiwan, with more than 10 million mobile subscribers, and provides fixed line and data services as well. The operator has been an NSN customer since the roll-out of its GPRS network in 1999. NSN is the sole supplier for the operator’s island-wide HSPA+ network, and that contract has been extended in order to increase Chunghwa’s 3G network capacity.
According to NSN, the LTE Radio Access Network for Chunghwa will be built with its Flexi Multiradio base stations, and the company will expand the HSPA+ network and ensure smooth interworking. NSN will also enable voice services for LTE with its circuit-switched fallback technology, so that calls will run on the 3G network while the LTE network handles mobile broadband data services. The operations support system will be based on NSN’s NetAct platform.
Along with network hardware, the deal also includes network planning and optimization, system integration, technical consultation and customer care.
