BWCS says U-TDOA will offer most location services revenue

LEDBURY, United Kingdom-U.K. consultancy BWCS said mobile operators could greatly increase location-services revenues by selecting a strong location technology. The company said a U.S. system called uplink time difference of arrival (U-TDOA) offers greater accuracy and consistency of services than rival technologies.

BWCS said its research involved extensive interviews with operators and location-based application developers, along with its projections of service take-up. “We found that there are gaping disparities in the revenue-generating potential of the different systems available,” said Graham Wilde, managing director of BWCS.

The company released a white paper on the topic predicting that a mobile operator installing U-TDOA now could expect nearly a fourfold increase in future revenues from location services. The report said mobile operators relying on cell identification for positioning technology are taking chances with offering an accurate, consistent service.

BWCS said U-TDOA “substantially” outperformed other location systems, including cell-ID, enhanced cell-ID, E-OTD and A-GPS.
