Swedish 3G development continues, despite setbacks

OSLO, Norway-Mobile operator Orange may appeal the ruling by Swedish national telecom regulator PTS, which rejected any changes to the conditions of its third-generation (3G) license. Orange asked for a three-year rollout extension and now has until 22 October to decide to fight the decision.

Orange press chief Anette Gregow said the PTS ruling neglected to factor in obstacles involving competitor Telia. Orange claimed national roaming for 3G development is slowed by lack of access to Telia’s existing GSM network, and it also wants Telia to be obliged to share masts.

Meanwhile, Tele2 Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lars-Johan Jarnheimer said its 3G cooperation with Telia is continuing as planned. Jarnheimer said investment will be high as it gives UMTS development “full gas” in 2003. Jarnheimer has also been careful to play down expectations and expects teething problems before the 3G technology takes off.
