Koshika’s Indian license terminated

NEW DELHI, India-The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has terminated the license of Koshika Telecom, a cellular service provider in Uttar Pradesh (East) circle, following default in payment of license fee and spectrum charges worth 1 billion rupees (US$20.6 million) to the government.

The government decision follows dismissal of a court case filed by the company.

Koshika was granted the license in December 1995. An official statement noted that because there are two operators available in the circle and a third one is to start operations soon, customers will not be affected by this move. Koshika has about 56,000 subscribers in this service area.

The company’s license for three other circles-Uttar Pradesh (West), Orissa and Bihar-were cancelled two years ago for the same reason.
