JAKARTA, Indonesia-Singapore’s mobile market grew slightly in terms of the number of mobile subscribers during the first half of this year.
According to the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), the country’s telecom regulator, there were 3,040,800 total mobile subscribers as of the end of June this year. The figure represents a 1.91-percent growth compared with the same period last year.
SingTel Mobile, which leads the market with about a 50-percent market share, has strengthened its data services to increase revenue. In line with its data focus, SingTel has launched a worldwide competition to search for Java-based applications to enrich its data offerings, which include location-based short message service (SMS) over its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network.
Meanwhile, SingTel rivals MobileOne (M1) and StarHub have carried out similar programs. StarHub launched GPRS access for personal digital assistant (PDA) and notebook users, while M1 recently launched multimedia messaging service (MMS).
The country’s mobile penetration stands at 73.6 percent, or a 1.5-percent increase from the same period last year.
