Subscribers fight to get Nitel GSM connections

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-Nigerian Telecommunications (Nitel) recently launched its prepaid services in the major cities of the country. However, potential subscribers have been frustrated in their efforts to gain lines, as dealers in Abujuam Lagos, Abeokut, Ibadan, Kano, Otta, Owerri and Port Harcourt reported they had insufficient stock to meet the demand.

The general consensus among Nigerians is that the Nitel GSM prepaid service is cheaper than the other network operators’ similar packages, and therefore, more desirable.

Davis Daramla Nitel executive director of mobile communications, said the network would review the relationships with the dealers to ensure that they charge the standard price for the Nitel GSM prepaid subscriber identity module (SIM) cards and that they are sufficiently stocked.
