BEIJING-China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) expects China to produce 95 million mobile handsets this year, of which 20 percent would be made by 12 domestic producers, up from 80 million last year, when 12 percent of total output was produced by 30 domestic suppliers.
If those figures prove to be correct, domestic manufacturers would increase their production from 9.6 million handsets last year to 19 million this year.
During January to May, 38.92 million handsets were produced in China by the 30 licensed manufacturers, a 36.4-percent increase on the previous corresponding period, Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post reported. Top producers Ningbo Bird and TCL recorded threefold to fourfold sales increases in the first five months.
During this period, 38.96 million mobile handset units were sold in China, up 40.4 percent from the previous year. The MII forecast that of the 95 million handset units to be produced this year, 45 million would be shipped overseas.
