TOKYO-Hitachi, a leading telecom vendor in Japan, is going to provide cdma2000 1x EV-DO base stations to KDDI, Hitachi announced on Thursday. KDDI is planning to launch experimental 1x EV-DO services in April and commercial services in the fourth quarter of 2003 in Japan.
According to Hitachi, 1x EV-DO, which has been developed by Qualcomm and approved by the Third-Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2), is capable of providing up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) transmission services. KDDI and Hitachi have jointly conducted a series of field tests for 1x EV-DO technology in Tokyo since 2000.
Korean vendor Samsung will also supply EV-DO equipment to KDDI. “We will supply base station equipment to KDDI worth more than US$100 million this year for its 3G CDMA 1x EV-DO wireless service due for launch later next year,” said Samsung in a statement.
