Sprint to consult China Unicom on cdma2000

HONG KONG—Sprint PCS and China Unicom have formed a strategic alliance for cdma2000 services, Sprint PCS’ Bill Blessing told attendees Wednesday at the 3G World Congress here. As part of the memorandum signed last week, Sprint PCS will provide training and consulting to China Unicom, including a formal training program taught by Sprint in China. The two carriers also will compare work experiences in the United States for China Unicom staff, including quality of service issues.

Uptake of CDMA services in China has been much less than original forecasts. China Unicom reportedly has about 1 million subscribers, but it is unlikely to reach its target of about 7 million CDMA users by year-end.
