Microsoft shuts down Swedish mobile unit

STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Microsoft Corp. closed its Mobile Internet Business Unit in Stockholm, Sweden, cutting about 80 jobs. The affected employees will be offered jobs in the company’s U.S.-based headquarters.

The Microsoft Mobile Internet business unit was initially established to develop bridging technologies to integrate proprietary systems and the Internet, and to connect mobile users to corporate networks.

“Due to the growing ubiquity of the Internet and the industry evolution to standard protocols for mobile solutions, many of these technologies have been integrated into Microsoft’s server product or are no longer required,” the company said.

The technologies developed in the MIBU will be integrated into other Microsoft products, including Exchange and the short message service gateway that is part of the company’s .NET Web Service.
