WASHINGTON—Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell Thursday announced the creation of a Spectrum Policy Task Force to help the agency deal with increased demands for dwindling radio frequencies. The formation of the group comes as the FCC and Bush administration struggle to find additional spectrum for third-generation wireless systems.
The task force, composed of senior staff—lawyers, economists and engineers—from several bureaus and offices, is seeking public comment by July 8 on a variety of spectrum issues. Reply comments are due July 23. Multiple workshops will be held in July and August to foster debate on spectrum policy. The spectrum task force will provide the FCC with a report in October.
