BRUSSELS, Belgium—GSM Europe member operators met with the European Commission in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss mobile industry issues, the GSM Association said.
The meetings came ahead of new telecommunications regulations, expected later this month, that could cut mobile-phone operators’ revenue by up to 8 percent.
The association used the meeting to propose to the EU that over-regulation could have adverse effects on third-generation services, the EU should consult with member states to support 3G development and the commission should not hinder m-commerce with inappropriate financial regulation.
The meeting was attended by 18 European mobile operators, with additional discussions focusing on infrastructure sharing, spectrum management, license conditions, network rollout, m-commerce, new services and support from the commission to the industry. The meeting also addressed the EU’s eEurope Action Plan, which recognizes that 3G communications are essential in Europe, the association said.
“This (new communications regulatory) package has been designed to reduce red tape, it offers technology neutrality, is flexible and will pave the way for a more level playing field for telecoms in Europe,” said Commissioner Erkki Liikanen.
