NEW DELHI, India—Shin Satellite Public Company Limited said it signed a procurement contract with Bagan Cybertech IDC and Teleport for the provision of rural telephony services throughout Myanmar by the fourth quarter.
Bagan is a semi-government-owned telecommunications company in Myanmar offering VSAT services, high-speed Internet and intranet connectivity and national rural telephony in conjunction with Myanmar Post and Telecom.
Under the contract, Shin Satellite and Bagan will jointly set up a gateway in Myanmar, with Bagan responsible for its operation and maintenance. The first 200 of 5,000 user terminals will be adopted for rural telephony services using the current gateway at the Thicom Teleport and DTH Center.
“We will deploy iPSTAR user terminals for the rural telephony project for more than 3,000 villages that still have no communication services. We are targeting installation in 500 villages in the first year,” said Dr. Ye Naing Wynn, Bagan chief executive officer (CEO).
Meanwhile, United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Thuraya also launched its dual-mode GSM-satellite phone services in Sri Lanka, in association with leading GSM operator MTN Networks, which is a fully owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia.
