Japanese government to allocate 5 GHz band for wireless carriers

TOKYO—The Japanese government has decided to allocate the 5 GHz band for wireless carriers by the end of this year.

The Telecommunications Council, an advisory body for the Minister for Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, on 7 May submitted a report that recommended the ministry allocate the 5 GHz band for open field use. Parts of the 5 GHz band have been allocated for carriers; however, use of the 5 GHz band has been limited to inside facilities.

The telecom ministry is going to revise the Wireless Law by next July at the earliest and will start accepting applications for the new band allocations. Some Japanese carriers are planning to launch wireless service based on the 5 GHz band.
