WASHINGTON—American University in Washington, D.C., is implementing a campus-wide wireless system to handle voice, data and messaging via cell phones, personal digital assistants and laptop computers.
KPMG Consulting is implementing the system, which should be ready by the fall semester.
To gain access to the network, students, faculty and staff will go to the Web sites of the carriers selected by the University to provide service. Discounted rate plans will be offered to students as part of the University’s corporate plan, and each student will be responsible for his/her own bill.
Over time, the University said it will alleviate the cost of at least half of its current wire line phones.
