Safaricom claims top spot in Kenya

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Safaricom, the joint venture between Telkom Kenya and Vodafone Group, has reported that the operator’s subscriber base has grown from 15,000 to 440,000 since re-launch in 2000.

A spokesman for the network operator said the company would like to thank subscribers for their patience during the recent congestion problems that beset the network. In the meantime, Safaricom ordered a third switch, which will increase the installed capacity up to 750,000 subscribers. The switch has been delivered and is being installed with expected service by mid-May, at which point, the congestion should be eliminated.

In addition, the operator is asking subscribers to switch their phone prefixes from 072 to 0722 to reduce the congestion.
