Verizon expands Express Network to new markets

CHICAGO—Verizon Wireless plans to roll out its next-generation Express Network in a trio of new U.S. markets this week, including Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. The market launch expands the carrier’s Express Network coverage to more than 72 million potential customers or one-third of its wireless network.

Customers in the new markets, as well as Verizon Wireless’ other launched markets along the East Coast, in the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City, can access the network through either a US$300 Sierra Wireless AirCard 555 on their personal computer or with Kyocera’s 2235 handset, which can act like a wireless modem. The Kyocera handset retails for US$80 with the wireless modem connection kit selling for an additional US$80.

Verizon Wireless said the service provides average wireless data speeds of between 60 and 80 kilobits per second (kbps) with maximum throughput of 144 kbps and that it will offer its current pricing plans in the new markets, allowing customers to pay by the minute or by the amount of information transmitted.
