Reports of illegal towers worry Indian ITC panel

While referring to media reports that nearly 3,000 mobile towers operating in India’s capital of Delhi were set up without the required approvals, the parliamentary standing committee on information technology expressed serious doubts over the efficacy of the telecom authority’s vigilance and monitoring mechanism.

While asking the Department of Telecom to furnish information on the issue, the committee wondered how the department proposed to check the emission levels of these illegal mobile towers. The committee has sought information on the number and fuel use of telecom towers operating on diesel fuel.

The details about the telecom department’s initiative to introduce green energy in the telecom sector has also been sought by the committee. The DoT has also been asked for details on constraints faced by it in introducing green energy in the sector.

The committee has also sought information on the Telecom Regulatory Authority’s carbon credit policy.
