SAN DIEGO—In a move the company said would help it focus on its operations this year, Leap Wireless International Inc. laid off 16 employees from its Backwire e-mail newsletter and WAP operations.
The carrier said the layoffs include 6 people from its San Diego headquarters and 10 people from its east coast offices. Leap currently employs approximately 1,800 people.
“We looked at all the progress we have made and these two operations were not working,” said Dan Pegg, senior vice president of public affairs for Leap.
Leap originally purchased Backwire last March and planned to integrate its personalization engine and team of Internet content editors into its location-based myAladdin wireless technology. The myAladdin technology was eventually used for Leap’s Slice mobile data service.
Pegg said the layoffs would not have any effect on the companies operations going forward.
