RIM acquires graphics software company

TORONTO—Research in Motion (RIM) of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, has acquired Plazmic, a closely held Toronto company that makes software for wireless devices. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 1996, Plazmic develops graphic programs for handhelds using the Java programming language, which has been adopted by RIM for some of its devices. Plazmic’s customers include Japanese wireless communications company NTT DoCoMo and entertainment conglomerate Walt Disney.

RIM has indicated it may license its software to wireless device manufacturers. The Plazmic acquisition will help Java development for possible licensing.
