TOKYO—Mitsubishi Electric and Samsung Electronics announced they have standardized specifications for random access memory modules (RAMs) for use in mobile devices to provide higher density, smaller packaging and lower prices.
The companies have decided on two specifications for RAMS (which Mitsubishi refers to as “Mobile RAMs” and Samsung calls “UtRAMs”) for various kinds of data processing. First, a data-keeping block select function will allow required data to be stored at a minimum standby current. In addition, a software power-down function says the state of power consumption of ultra-low current can be maintained.
These new specifications will ensure that the least amount of memory is used by any mobile device.
The companies plan to begin supplying products with standardized functions in June 2002. Mitsubishi and Samsung added that this agreement may lead to the standardization of other mobile RAM specifications, including those covering performance and function, in the future.
