OXFORD, United Kingdom—German manufacturing giant Siemens has announced a further 7,000 job cuts, of which 2,000 will be within its cell-phone division, and has called a halt to tentative merger talks with Motorola.
The company, which declared a surprise loss in its fiscal third quarter, has announced about 17,000 job cuts his year, 10,000 being in the networks unit and 4,600 in the division making cell phones and mobile networks. While these work force reductions are not seen as directly related to the failure of joint venture discussions with Motorola, management is thought to be more focused on internal issues than long-term merger or partnership deals. However, insiders expect Siemens to revive the talks early next year with Motorola and other unnamed parties.
