TOKYO—NTT DoCoMo plans to triple the data transmission speed (for downlinks) of i-mode service from current 9.6 kbps to 28.8 kbps in the spring of 2002, NTT DoCoMo announced on 11 September. At the same time, it will increase the memory capacity for iAppli service, NTT DoCoMo’s Java-based service, from the current 10 kilobytes to 30 kilobytes.
Due to the increase in the speed, i-mode users will be able to browse i-mode sites at a higher speed. Due to the expansion of the memory capacity, iAppli users will be able to enjoy much bigger and more sophisticated content. KDDI Corp., a rival of NTT DoCoMo, has been providing its Java service with 50 kilobytes and J-Phone, another rival, is providing its Java service with 30 kilobyte memory.
